Ein offener Brief der "Citizen's Alliance Stop Polluting the Ocean"

We write to you as members of "Citizens' Alliance Stop Polluting the Ocean!", resident inWe write to you as members of "Citizens' Alliance Stop Polluting the Ocean!", resident inTokyo and Fukushima prefecture. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the SpecialRapporteur on the implications for human rights of the environmentally sound management anddisposal of hazardous substances and wastes, the Special Rapporteur on the right to food, theSpecial Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, and theSpecial Rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples for the mandate presented to JapaneseMinister for Foreign Affairs Toshimitsu Motegi on April 20th, 2020, and the subsequent statementto the Japanese Government on June 9th •

This mandate, with its call to the Japanese Government for caution regarding thedischarge of contaminated water, precisely mirrors the deep concerns we have been continuallyraising with the Japanese Government and TEPCO. The opening plea strongly urging "theJapanese Government to delay any decision on the ocean-dumping of nuclear waste water fromthe reactors at Fukushima Daiichi until after the COVID-19 crisis has passed and properinternational consultations can be held" is in line with our strong requests to the government notto hold hearings with affected parties whilst the COVID-19 state of emergency remains in place.We will not forget how, as COVID-19 began its spread around the world early this year and theJapanese Government was struggling to handle the patients on board the Diamond Princess inYokohama and the repatriation of Japanese citizens from China, the government was still pursuingits plans to finalise its contaminated water disposal policy.  ...
