Invitation to International Convocation for Declaring a People’s Korea Peace Treaty

Dear friends,

I bring a sincere greeting to you on behalf of the National Council of Churches in Korea.

The year 2020 marks the 70 years’ anniversary of the Korean War. With the three-year-long Korean War from 1950 to 1953, more than six million people were killed and wounded, and the entire country was completely destroyed. Since the Korean War the division became an unavoidable reality, and the two Koreas are still under the status of the armistice living with the fear of another war.

Therefore, the NCCK affirmed that the very first step towards peace and reconciliation is to end the ongoing Korean War and establish a permanent peace regime by turning the current armistice into a peace treaty. It is in this light that for the last several years we have consolidated all our efforts to realize a Korea peace treaty.

To sum up all our efforts towards a Korea peace treaty, the NCCK along with civil society NGOs will call for an international convocation on July 15th-17th, 2020. This convocation will be a culmination of all our efforts towards a Korea peace treaty as well as critical momentum for breaking through the current deadlock situation of the Korean Peace Process and articulating a new vision for a peaceful Korea together with the peace-loving forces in the world. I hope too that this convocation will be a turning point empowering people’s initiatives for peace-building, transforming the present geo-political context of the Korean Peninsula, and eventually presenting a new vision and hope for a peaceful Korea.

It is a great pleasure for me to invite you to this historical convocation. As we expect around 250 participants including 80 overseas participants, we need your prompt and earlier response, referring to the concept paper and time table. To relieve your financial burden, the local cost including lodging and boarding will be covered by the Korean host committee, but I ask you to bear your own airfares. ...
