Welcome to the Facebook page of the 3rd International Conference on Minority Issues and Mission to be held in Tokyo, Japan from 17 to 22 November 2015 under the theme, “Together Towards a Just and Inclusive Society in Japan”. This conference will be hosted by the Korean Christian Church in Japan with the cooperation of other Christian churches in Japan and is being sponsored by the Commission on World Mission and Evangelism (CWME) and the Churches Commission on International Affairs (CCIA) of the World Council of Churches (WCC).

The specific goal of this conference is to address the alarming rise of so called “hate speech” street demonstrations organised by extremist groups against Korean residents in Japan. There has been a marked increase in such street demonstrations and verbal violence in the form of “hate speech” and threatening letters sent to Korean schools and other institutions. Such hatred expressed in these actions are not only directed against the Koreans but also to Chinese and immigrants from other regions, the Buraku (a community long discriminated against under the Japanese feudal caste system), the Ainu (the aboriginal people of Northern Japan), the people of Okinawa, and now the people of Fukushima who were victims of the nuclear power disaster that occurred in 2011.

The specific objectives that the conference will seek to reach would be
• to expose the reality of racial and other forms of discrimination in Japan;
• to advocate for the elimination of racial and other forms of discrimination;
• to build ecumenical networks of solidarity; and
• to nurture a spirit of reconciliation, hospitality and justice in society that presents alternatives to the permeating culture of violence, discrimination, xenophobia and injustice.
